Describe what you and your company do. We handle complex litigation
for businesses, including product liability lawsuits,
warranty disputes and intellectual property disputes.
Please share information about your
husband/significant other/children/pets.
I am married to my wonderful
husband Steven Dunn. We have three children, er...cats:
Pippi, Scout and Junior, who are all littermates that we’ve
had since they were abut eight weeks old. They’re almost
three now and still haven’t figured out that they were
adopted. How do you break it to a kid that he’s not actually
human?
What do you do to relax/unwind?
Play with my lovely
kitties. They always seem to know when I’ve had a stressful
day and are very good at helping me get back to my happy
place.
Tell us about:
the book you are reading now
I picked up To Kill a
Mockingbird again. It is a favorite of mine and I like
to
reread some of my favorites
from time to time.
the last movie you saw
“The Hurt Locker”
your favorite TV show
Tough decision because I
watch far too much TV, but I’ll go with “Modern Family.”
It’s the
only television show that I have to pause because I’m laughing so hard.
your favorite comfort food
Meatloaf
your dream job
Food critic. Who
wouldn’t love to get paid to eat!?!?
your last vacation
Napa Valley. It was actually my
honeymoon (we got married October 31, 2009) and we were
out there at a perfect time. Fabulous weather, fantastic food and
delicious wines!
what you’d do if you won the lottery
All those things I don’t
have the time to do now!
your favorite childhood memory
I grew up on the family
farm - the same house where my dad grew up. My
grandparents had planted an apple orchard in the back yard and I loved to
climb the trees. I also have fond
memories of playing with all the barn kitties!
where you grew up
Just outside Fort Wayne, Indiana on Butt Road. Not a typo.
My dad used to joke that we
lived at the ass end of the Butt Road.
where you went to school
I started my educational career at Agape Pre-school,
followed by a stint at Arcola
Elementary School, where all kids are stars (that’s the actual motto). I
moved up to Carroll Junior High School
before graduating from Carroll High School. Desperate to get out of
Indiana, I went to Syracuse University in
upstate New York for my undergraduate degree. I eventually landed
in Richmond, where I decided to fulfill a
long-held dream of going to law school, and I attended T. C. Williams
School of Law at the University of
Richmond.
your idea of a perfect day
Relaxing at home with a
book, a roaring fire and a glass of wine.
What is the
best business advice you’ve ever gotten?
Work to live, don’t live to
work.
Share your
favorite networking tip:
Enter new contacts into your
Outlook (or whatever program you use) right away so you
don’t forget who the person is and why she is interesting.
Include lots of details in the notes section about what you
found most interesting about the person or what she does.
Recommended business reading:
My business is the law
and I love to read the weekly American Bar Association
Newsletter. There’s always a great mix of industry news,
recent case decisions and entertaining stories about what
not to do as a lawyer!
What quality do you most admire in
others?
Sense of humor.
What do you know now that you wish
you’d know then?
At some point between my
first job and my second, I learned about humility. If only
I’d had a dose at age 22.
I wish I could
run. I’ve always been
envious of athletic people. Even when I played sports in
school I was always the slowest girl on the team.
My Mom told me
I could do anything I
set my mind to do. I think she was right. Now I’ve got to
work on setting my mind to do those things I really don’t
want to do...
If I were U.S. President I would
abolish lifetime
appointments to federal courts.
My co-workers think I’m too
nice. It’s a terrible
quality, I know.
The best thing I ever did was
to get out of my comfort
zone. I’ve done it many times – going away to college,
moving half-way across the country to a new town where I
didn’t know anyone, joining the Moot Court team in law
school. Every time, I initially suffered extreme anxiety,
dread and regret before realizing it was the best thing I
could have possibly done for myself.
I wish I had never
wasted time worrying
what other people thought about me.
I’d like to get tickets to see
“The Phantom of the
Opera.” I love the music!
I’d like 30 minutes alone with
Oprah.
My pet peeve at work is
meetings that take far
longer than they should.
I’d like to know more about
rose gardening. We
bought a home back in the fall and inherited the prior
owner’s lovely rose bushes. Unfortunately, I know nothing
about how to care for them. Any RCEN members with some
expertise they’d like to share?
I have a collection of
half-finished or
not-yet-started craft projects - mostly knit and crochet
projects.
I spend too much time
doing something; I just don’t
know what it is. All I know is that I don’t have enough time
to do everything else!
What is your favorite thing about
Richmond?
The size. It is just
big enough that we have all kinds of fun things to do and
places to see, but not so large that it takes an hour to get
to work each morning. I also love that we have wineries
within a quick drive to the North and West, and that the
ocean is just a short drive away.
What would you change?
In my industry, I still
get a sense of the “Old Southern Boys Network.” I would
love for those attitudes and mentalities to change.
What is your favorite place for a
business lunch? Why?
I don’t do many business
lunches, but I do like to go to Kobe. It is a short walk
from my office, and while I’m not a sushi person, I do love
their chicken teriyaki!
What would we be surprised to learn
about you?
Prior to law school, I
worked as a local television news producer, most recently in
Richmond at NBC 12. While at NBC 12, I earned two regional
Emmy awards for producing the 11 p.m. newscast.
What else would you like us to know
about you?
Just that I am excited
to be joining the group, and I look forward to getting to
know each of you!
